Conjúnto: CHICAGO SESSIONS |
|
|
In addition to Conjúnto's regular performers, Sanders invited a few guests to appear on "Chicago Sessions". Angel d'Cuba brings his amazing voice to two of the tracks. It doesn't matter if you understand the words. It's the feeling he brings to the music. The contrast between his voice and solos by Sanders on Violin, Eisen on Flute and Neale on Keys is at times fun and playful, sometimes serious, but always exciting and absorbing. And always, always the rhythm section is there backing up the soloists, coming to the forefront now with exuberant energy and spirit, stepping to the side now again to let the Angel soar.
Alfonso Ponticelli on Gypsy Jazz Guitar…wait, what?...gypsy jazz guitar? Not something you hear every day. But it's fabulous.Ponticelli's performance is simply breathtaking. Coupled with Sanders' violin it is a highly unexpected sound. It is the kind of thing that makes this ensemble's music impos-sible to categorize. It's appealing and fresh and somehow also familiar and easy to fall in love with.
Tito Carillo's Trumpet is, as always, a sound to be reckoned with. On both tracks that he appears, Carillo shows considerable restraint. You know it's Tito…he's there giving it everything. But he knows he's playing as part of an ensemble. He allows all members to shine, which makes his sound brighter, more brilliant.

Conjúnto: LIVE AT LITTLE VILLAGE |
CD Baby CD/MP3 |
|
Roel Trevino whom I had started Conjúnto with a year before owned a small club in Litlle Village called The Jacaranda. He had brought up the idea of having Conjúnto perform there. Leaving Downtown I navigated south to check out the club. When I hit 26th Street, the lights and signs lit up the evening sky. The Jacaranda was in the midst of this.
The club was cozy and intimate, a great setting for live music we decided to make a stand. Roel threw up some lights, we bought a P.A. and our friend Ruben, a good bass player and master carpenter built a stage. We started playing every Friday night and our friends and the community supported us. Then and now it seems like every time we play there are magical moments and intimate encounters with people who stop by and musicians who sit in.
In my opinion, the band is comprised of some of the finest musicians in the city, But, more impor-tantly we all love to play this music and we are enjoying ourselves. In addition to his magnificent Conga playing Roel Trevino has influenced the direction of Conjúnto by giving us a base of operation and no matter where we may play I have a feeling The Jacaranda will always be home to us.
As on many other nights we had a great crowd on the evenings of these recordings. We dedicate this album to all of you who come out and inspire us to reach for something higher.

James Sanders Trio: MINSTRELS |
CD Baby CD/MP3 |

"This
CD has gotten air play on several local stations, WDCB,
WBEE and WBEZ. Several record
stores, including Virgin, Tower, Jazz Record Mart, and Music Land
are carrying this product. It is also available on line through CD Baby's online
order or through Amazon.com and Futurarecords.com
James says: "I have sold
some at live performances and to clients who have given them as
gifts to friends, but I have been most flattered by the owners
of my neighborhood coffee shop, Cafe Express. This is a wonderful
European style cafe located at the corner of Main and Hinman in
Evanston, IL. It's the type of place where people have their coffee
with perhaps a sandwich, while they read, work on their laptop
or converse with a friend.
The owners
love the music and play it quite frequently for their patrons.
They say the music creates a relaxing and soothing mood, complimenting
the atmosphere.
That means
a lot to me, since my intention in making the recording was to
immerse the listener in a comforting serenade. What better setting
to have that vision materialize than at Cafe Express, my favorite
hang out!" |
